Peace to You

Thank you for all the thoughtful messages. It's hard to put up a post like that. I don't like to admit when I can't do it all, when I'm hurting or when I have failed at something. That's never fun.

I wish it was just me being sad or having the holiday blues. But I do have a strength that comes from a deeper source and I will continue to draw from those waters while we take care of what needs to be done.

The best thing you can do for me, besides praying for us, is keep me busy. If you love my beads, keep supporting me. I've taken off the time that I needed and I've reduced several commitments on my end so that I can focus on working at what I need to do each day. I find comfort in creating and knowing my work inspires others.

I made this bracelet as a gift for someone dear who I thought needed a reminder to find her own peace in this world too. We can't control the storms outside, but we can control how we weather them. That's a message for myself too.

Two Hands, One Heart

I've been trying to decide what to share on my blog for the last few days. I try to keep things positive here and for my family's privacy I don't share certain things that we are going though and I'm sure you can understand that. But my world fell apart in November and I have been trying to keep the pieces pulled together. That's all I can say without going into details. I'm so thankful for my sister and husband who have been there to help me though this. I'm so thankful for my mom who lets me cry with her on the phone. I wish she were here, nothing beats having a hug from your mom. I'm so thankful for my dear friends who listen with kind and caring hearts as I share my heartbreak. And there has been so much brokenness over the last month.

I took a much needed break last week. I should have done that sooner, but I didn't realize how hard everything had been on me and how it was effecting my business.

You see, I have two hands and one heart and they have to work together.

For a while, they weren't.

I'm doing better, thanks to my family and some serious self-care over the last week.

If I have upset you because of a lack of communication, please forgive me.

I've done all I could over the last few weeks while trying to take care of my family.

I hope you'll understand and move forward with me.

At this point, that is all I can do - move ahead. One step at a time.

Ornament Blog Hop

I'm hosting an Ornament Blog Hop today on the Art Bead Scene.

We take decorating our Christmas tree very serious in the Humble Home. For the last 17 years Jess and I have been making themed ornaments for our tree each year. We come up with a theme together and get to work like little elves. Over the last few years the ornament collection has been a reoccurring woodland theme with birds, nests, acorns, pine cones and snowflakes. As you can imagine our tree is filled with beaded ornaments that I have created over the years. It's one of my favorite crafty projects of the season!

This year's ornament features a Vintaj brass leaf embellished with embossing powders in a faux enamel finish. I layered on an Arte Metal leaf pendant and a trio of brass beads wrapped to look like berries. I paired them up with one of my disk beads, a rhinestone rondelle, a ceramic bead from Earthenwood and a fun beaded bead that I picked up at Michael's.

Jess sat down and made his own version of the design.

I'm always thrilled when I see what you have been up to with my Humblebeads. Some of these were shared with me quite awhile ago but I thought they needed a little time to shine in the spotlight.

I love these earrings made with tiny crocheted snowflakes by Leslie Smith Gidden, she paired them up with some tiny blue spacer beads in a winter branches pattern. Perfect as I'm impatiently waiting for the ground to be covered in white fluff here in Michigan!

Next up is a Blue Bird and wood bracelet by Sasha and Max. Those bittersweet orange lampwork beads were the perfect touch and give the design a modern edge.

I really, really love piece from Jess Italia-Lincoln. Even more so because it's the perfect memento of my trip to Galena and all the fun things we did during the Vintaj workshop. Notice the willow branch wrapped into a toggle - awesome! and I love the wire nest bead. Jess used some of my Bittersweet Branch disks, one of my Robin's eggs and paired them up with a Simple Truths pendant from my dearest bead buddy, Erin Prais-Hintz.

It's a case of life imitating art!

Yesterday was the first snow of the season. Which led me to burst into song:

It's snowing, it's snowing, it's S-N-O-W-I-N-G!

Michigan is all together lovely - I thought I might feel a little sad when all the trees were bare, but I had forgotten how enchanting the woods are in their minimalist state. Each time I'm outside I find myself completely overtaken by nature's abundance.

I'm looking forward to the Holiday Trunk Show at Bead Quest tomorrow.

I'm off to work like a little elf finishing up a few more holiday beads.

Holiday Happenings

I have three holiday events that are fast approaching.

The first one is this weekend, Saturday November 12th from 10-5pm at Bead Quest in Grand Rapids, MI.

Bead Quest is hosting their annual holiday event with several artists and a crystal event. It should be quite the party. I am teaching my nest class in the morning and then from 2-5pm I'm signing books. My beads will be available throughout the day. I am making lots of the new holiday items, they flew out of my Etsy shop as fast I could make them this weekend. I have a feeling they will do well at the open house too.

And speaking of making things quickly, I'm also preparing to take items for the South Haven Art Center for their annual Mistletoe Market. That is a holiday boutique that goes from November 18th until December 11th. I'm making lots of impulse buy items: pendants, earrings, hair pins, etc - it's a tourist town that is pretty slow in the winter, but the artsy folks in the area brave the cold and support local artists. Don't you just love that? Ah, that makes me feel nostalgic - I remember shopping for Christmas gifts at the Mistletoe Market when I was in high school and then selling at the market for many years when I was a budding jewelry designer. Oh, those were the salad days.

And finally, my last event of the year will be the Artist's Market at the Urban Institute of Contemporary Arts. We used to do this show back in the day too. Now the UICA is all spiffy in their new big building and it's their 23rd annual show. This will be the show I pull out the big guns and get all super high end creative with designs like the ones in my book.

I haven't even started to explore Grand Rapids. There are all these hip little shops in my old neighborhood - it's totally urban chic. I want to go check out The Sparrows coffee shop - okay, I just love the name. There are some wonderful galleries and shops and I'd like to visit. Hopefully at the beginning of December when I slow down a bit and we are all settled here in GR.

Overwhelmed - nope, not really. Way more excited about living my dream everyday and rising to the challenge.

Yesterday I made a collection of tiny holiday charms. You can find a fun pendant project on the Art Bead Scene today showing this technique. Here is one using a Vintaj Arte Metal blank.

Birds: Hope and Strength

You know what I love? Looking out a window into a snowy field, dark tree branches stretched across the sky - and then, you see it! A tiny little red bird hopping from snow covered branch to snow covered branch.

Cardinals are a symbol of strength during trying times. A symbol of life and hope during the cold winter months. I like a bird that reminds us that even the frailest of creatures can endure hardship.

I'm eagerly awaiting the snow. Fall has been amazingly lovely. Nature's refuse sweeps across the landscape in warm shades of bronze, copper and gold. I marvel at the the flame red bushes and Japanese maple. But I'm secretly waiting for the morning I wake up to a world transformed by ice and snow. Or better yet, look out my window to the magic of those fluffy white flakes. When those berry red leaves will look like sugar-coated confections.

The change is drastic from Texas. I've made fast friends with soft, warm socks after 10 years of running barefoot for most of the year. I've relished in finally being able to wear my sweet scarf collection - and not with sandals. I wait more for the sunlight than before, the days get darker quicker. It's taken a while to find the perfect spot to take photos of the beads. I enjoy each contrast from the sun-drenched and brown land we lived in before.

Michigan is all together amazing. I'm loving every minute as I feel the seasons change.

The cardinal and blue bird have been sitting on a page in my sketchbook, patiently waiting for me to find the time to bring them to life. They look like little paintings. I'm glad I finally had a chance whip them up!

My life has been filled with trials and joy. With challenges and blessings. Moving across the country has been exactly as it should be - life changing! I finally feel like I'm catching up from it all and getting a handle on the new daily rhythm. It's a new work schedule, more of a balanced life with lots of family time. Life isn't quite settled, but it will be soon. And through it all I've found strength I didn't know I had and a peace that guides me through each day.

Bead Table Wednesday

It's been a while since I've done a Bead Table Wednesday post. I'm finally starting to get into a regular schedule again and gearing up for the rest of the season.

I have a little stash of beads I keep nearby so I can work on nests when I have a spare moment. I'm stocking up for holiday shows. I try to not work once the kids are home, but I do sneak in a little nest time when they are doing homework or off goofing around.

Eventually the nests will be used as pendants - simple and sweet and just awesome gifts. I was invited to do an Inspired by Nature Jewelry Trunk Show at the Kingman Museum in Battle Creek next month - so most of these are heading over there.

Along with a few shows I'm hoping to get into, I have a trunk show, book signing and Birds of a Feather Nest Workshop at Bead Quest here in Grand Rapids on November 12th - just a month away. The class will be lots of fun and a great way to get started on a few of your own holiday gifts! Everyone will leave with at least two completed nests.

I'm also working on plans for a Humblebeads Holiday Workshop for November and will have details posted soon.

The Key to Happiness

Oh, I likey! I took two floral skeleton keys from Vintaj and made them into curved bracelet components. I punched holes in one end of each key to convert them into connectors. The big leaf was from Ornamentea, it was raw brass that I antiqued with liver of sulphur - love that stuff. I added a little pinch of navy blue ribbon to offset my branch disk bead in midnight blue.

The keys were hammered and buffed to bring out the silver under tones.

I picked up a whole new bag of tricks from the Vintaj 2-Day workshop that I attended last month. Jess and her gang are so creative and inspiring! I love how innovative they were with their decorivets line. They transformed them into charms and connectors. I love being wowed and seeing something I would never have thought of - that's how you know it was a good class! More on that later.

So let's talk about the key to happiness.

It's something I've been thinking about a lot lately.

I am happy.

My happiness doesn't come from moving here to Michigan or being with my family. Although that is awesome!

The key to my happiness is not letting outward things dictate my happiness.

My happiness comes from a well deep within.

My happiness comes from ability to be thankful no matter the circumstance.

People can disappoint or fail me, but I still love them.

I weed out bitterness and never let that root take hold.

I accept the struggles as a chance to grow.

I find the good in each day and the more I look, the more good there is to find.

We all have struggles, but we are not alone. Reach out when you need someone to help lighten the load. I don't know of anything that makes my heart lighter than sharing with a friend and being able to find the humor in what seems unbearable at the moment.

Life passes by so quickly, if we only wait for those perfect moments or when things are going our way to find happiness we will miss out on all the good that is mixed in with the mess.

And you thought I just made a pretty bracelet to share! Jewelry is a way to share our stories. They have different meanings for the maker and the wearer, what stories are you telling?

Falling for Color!

My memories of fall pale in comparison to the tapestry of color I get to see every day here in Michigan. Each time I go out of the house it's a visual feast. I need to find some time to take photos before the colors start to fade. It's a mix of green, purple, yellow, crimson red and fiery orange. I was surprised by how lovely all the purple wildflowers set off the autumn hues. You know that's making it's way into a bead soon!

Oh and don't even get my started on Queen Anne's Lace. It's everywhere!

Here is a little bit of that purple snuck in with copper and olive. Love it! These are two hole spacer beads and a toggle set that can be used in with the Zen Garden Bracelet project from my book or used in a stringing project. They are something fun and different and make really color bracelet spacers.

These are some color variations of Bittersweet beads that I made some time ago. Inspired by those autumn colors that have my muse spinning around in my head!

So that's a little peek of beads from September. Now that I've soaked in the colors of fall I'm itching for more free time to make new beads. I have a trunk show in November and will need to start on the holiday goodies soon too.

So who's figured out how to make a clone yet? Or maybe Dr. Brown will deliver a DeLorean to me and I can squeeze in a few extra hours this week!

Retreat Goodies

I can not even tell you how much fun I had at my retreat. Can I do that 2 or 3 times a year? Yeah, that would awesome. It was the perfect weekend. I can't remember how many times I relished the perfect moment! But before the fun began I had spent a good month getting ready. First up are the gift bags - what's an event without a little swag? My aunt found the perfect bags for me - isn't she sweet!

Along with a copy of my book everyone received an issue of Bead Unique Magazine.

I put together little necklace kits featuring a Vintaj dragonfly pendant, silk ribbon, waxed linen, seed beads and a Humblebeads disk.

Marie from MoreSkyeJewels gave everyone an awesome bird pendant - they are really amazing!!!

My friend Angela Brittain donated silk dupioni cord in rich colors.

Everyone was treated to Simple Truths pendants created by Erin Prais-Hintz. She made a special one for each theme of the book: Woodland, Garden and Sea.

And then people surprised us with extra goodies like forged and etched metal charms from Mary Newton.

Other goodies were shared from our participants like nautical sketchbooks from Linda, shells from Terri and tiny hummingbirds from Royelle. It didn't take us long to warm up and we were soon making new friends and having fun reconnecting with those we already knew.

Along with preparing the gift bags, there were kits to assembly. This was part of my Birds of a Feather class and Poetry & Beads workshop.

I filled each kit with with a Humblebeads egg, stones, a Green Girl Studio bead or pendant and charm from Pulga N Pansas. The beads were put together with a poem and I broke everyone up into to small groups to brainstorm on how to translate their poem into beads.

Here are some of the finished pieces from the nest class and workshop. It was fun to see how different everyone made their final pieces based on what they thought of the poem.

More kit goodness! This was from the color workshop we did before we made our bracelets on Saturday afternoon. Everyone was able to explore color theory as they picked the components for their bracelets.

Here everyone is showing off their finished work. Some students had never created with seed beads and thread before. Everyone rose to the challenge and most had their bracelet ready to sport the following day! This is a project featured in my book.

I had students from all over the country. Some had never made jewelry before, others had been creating with beads for years and years. We had a great group, everyone was encouraging and loved sharing their inspirations. Here we are during our walk in the woods.

And my lovely bracelet models showing off their creations after a weekend of fun that flew by all too quickly.

I loved doing the retreat. In fact, I'm already starting to plan a spring one. And I have a one day holiday workshop that I am planning and I'm toying around with another class idea that's doing cart wheels in my head. I could get used to this! I would love to teach classes and workshops on a regular basis. I love seeing that spark of inspiration set in as a I student discovers their creativity!

Before I go I must thank my three awesome helpers - that includes my Mom, my Aunt Rosanne and my very dear friend Erin Prais-Hintz. They were the best!

Hello Again

I'm still here! I feel like this little guy who was hanging onto this thistle as it swayed in the cool September breeze.

I've just finished a whirlwind tour of events this month, including a book launch, bead show, my Inspired by Nature Retreat (where I took all these photos) and then a 4-day trip to Galena for a Vintaj workshop and trunk show and book signing at Galena Beads.

It's been filled with lots of moments of joy and some personal struggles over the last two weeks that have me playing catch up. I don't share a lot of personal information here. Just remember a blog only shows a snippet of what the writer wants to share. My life is filled with many wonderful things, but everyone has their own cross to bear.

Things are better today. I am going to sit in the studio for the rest of the afternoon and work on some overdue orders. Yesterday I sketched out new holiday beads and I have quite a collection of fall beads to photograph. I'm finding I'm a bit drunk on inspiration - the autumn colors are overwhelmingly beautiful. I have a lot to share with you, but wanted to say hello before another day passed.

Living an Abundant Life

Not just riches or material goods, but living a life filled with hope and expectation and how that differs from living a life filled with worry and fear. Book Launch Party

This weekend kicks off my official book launch and I'm celebrating like my book will be the only one in the store. I mean, come on - how often does one have a book launch? Bead Table Wednesday

It's Bead Table Wednesday and today's edition is coming to you from my temporary studio in Michigan. I enjoyed sitting outside on the deck this morning and snapping these photos. Loved the chilly morning photography session - heavenly!

These are beads that are on the cover of my book and can now be found in my Etsy shop.

I also pulled out some autumn colored beads in coppers and purples. Loving this combination for fall - it reminds me of stormy October skies with bright orange leaves clinging to the trees.

And here is some of the flora from my sister's garden. It's her flowers that are featured in the garden section of my book. I'm staying with my sister for a few weeks until Jess moves up here with the rest of our belongings. My sister is as talented in the garden and kitchen as I am in the studio - it's a very enjoyable visit.

And the view from my studio. I love looking out the window and seeing water. In fact, nothing makes me happier - except for the first day I look out and see snow - I can't wait!

Farmer's Market Inspiration

I have been enjoying a little time off with my family. The move has gone smoothly, I love everything about being here. In fact I couldn't be happier. And happiness is definitely not overrated. I was walking along a trail the other day and just had to thank God for giving me my heart's desire. It's not often that you get everything in life that you want, but right now my cup is overflowing with joy and all the people and places that make feel at home and completely happy.

My sister and I enjoyed a morning at the farmer's market yesterday - what amazing eye candy. I'm a little enamored with shades of orange - peach, pumpkin and petal soft coral. Paired next to gray, navy blue or deep teal blue - I see some color palettes for beads forming in head. Which is good because this week will be filled with making new beads for the Suburban Bead Encounter next Sunday, I'll need all the inspiration I can muster up for some amazing new beads!

Tomorrow I'll show you my new studio set up. The view is amazing!

From their website, "Pinterest is a virtual pinboard. Pinterest allows you to organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. You can browse pinboards created by other people to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests."

Basically you get an account - if you can have a friend invite you, you can get an account within minutes, if you sign up on their website without a referral it can take several weeks. I would ask on your facebook page for an invite, chances are you already know a few people who pin.

After you have your account you can download a "Pin It" button for your browser toolbar. Whenever you come across something you'd like to pin, you just press the button and add in your description and category. This is a great way to bookmark tutorials, things you'd like to buy later or inspiration photos. Each photo that you pin will include a link back to that page.

On your account you'll create 'boards' which are basically categories to arrange your pins.

On Pinterest you can connect using your facebook account and find friends already on Pinterest. It's really fun to follow your friends, you'll get to know them in a whole new way. You can also follow people you don't know if you find their boards inspiring. There is a simple 'follow' button and their pins will go to your Pinterest Feed, which is the page that you'll go to when you first log into the website.

You can also search pins under the "Everything" button for a quick dose of inspiration. You can search a specific topic, like jewelry organizers or search under their categories to see has been pinned under a topic.

So is this a marketing tool? I can't really say, it's not a self-promotional tool. You can post things that you have made, but that should only be a small part of your Pinterest activity. I have a Humblebeads in Action board that I post my beads used in jewelry by my customers and some of my tutorials or samples that I blogged about.

If you have a very helpful blog post, you could also pin that - make sure you have some really striking visuals in your post to use for the pin.

It's also an organic way for other creative bloggers to find you. You'll discover new blogs through Pinterest and meet new bloggers when checking things out.

Pin-Etiquette: Be a good pinner and don't spam everyone with only pins of your work, repin other peoples pins (there is a repin on every photo on Pinterest) leave nice comments and like pins from those you are following.

So what exactly can I do with this besides pin pretty pictures? Well, here are some ideas of ways you can use Pinterest:

Inspiration Boards - Create boards on themed topics to inspire new ideas. This is also great if you are looking for inspiration for blog posts.

Visual Bookmarking - Keep track of great tutorials and websites visually by Pinning them instead of creating bookmarks in the browser's favorites.

Vision Boards - Make a board of something you'd like to achieve - include photos that spur on your creativity and drive. There are tons of visual quotes pinned by others.

Party Planner & Recipe Finder - Collect party ideas and recipes for entertaining - there is a A LOT of this on Pinterest. You may find yourself wanting to throw parties just to use the ideas.

Gift Guide - Keep track of gift ideas visually - you can add the price to the description and there is a gift section to browse through. Hello early holiday shopping made easy.
Style Guide - I love pinning outfits, hairstyles and accessories that I'd like to get later or try out.

Trend Watcher - Scroll the the "everything" category a few times a week and you'll see what is trending at the moment - like ruffles! Scroll through the Apparel and Fashion Categories to see what is trending in these areas - like popular colors and jewelry styles.

New Blog Hunter - You'll discover all sorts of new blogs by clicking through on the images, many of them were from blog posts be all sorts of creative people you have yet to discover.

Social Network - Share inspirations, repin and comment to connect with others on Pinterset.

So is it just a waste of time? It can be - be warned!!! But I think if you are purposefully pinning and make a point to use those recipes, crafts and inspirations then it's time well spent. For example, we've enjoyed this sandwhich all summer thanks to Pinterest. Once we are settled into our new house I will be revisiting my pins for decorating ideas.

I can't wait to see what is pinned as the holiday's approach. I'm always on the look out for crafts and recipes to try and I know Pinterest will not disappoint.

A simple Bead Table Wednesday.

I may be a little too excited about getting to enjoy my first fall in 10 years!

I have been making beads while packing. Although we have most everything boxed up already.

The bead table is filled with leaves, acorn and owls. I tried a few different owl designs. I'm not sure which one I like the best or if I'm going to offer all three in my Etsy shop.

I'm switching things up this week. The challenges were a way to promote my book coming out and now that has happened sooner than I thought it was going to be, I'm going to simplify things here for myself! I'm sure you understand.

Do you remember a few weeks ago I mentioned auctioning off some large grab bags on my blog? I decided while that would have been fun only three people would have walked away with beads and that didn't seem fair. So I decided to spread the beady happiness around a little and broke them down into smaller grab bags.

And let me tell you - they are AWESOME! So awesome I had to give them that crazy title.

These are not seconds, in fact some of them are treasures that I've been hording and realized it's time to let them go. I know someone will put them to better use then being nestled away in my studio. So let's look at what I put together.

The "Unearthed Treasures" grab bags have earthy colors with some very unique beads. These sets have at least 6 beads, some many more. A few sets include my very limited edition William Morris series, pictured here.

The "Chase the Blues Away" grab bag has all sorts of blue hued beauties. Some include birds and eggs, one set has some of my tiny snowman and there are lots of beach inspired bead sets in this collections. Each set has 5 or more beads.

The "In the Pink grab" bags are so very lovely. Some of them are woodsy inspired with brown and pink combinations. Others head more towards the darker red hues. They all have great beads, many were one-of-kinds, like these never before seen pink willow pendants and charms.

The move is actually the easiest part of this process, I have my portable studio all ready to go in my suitcase (okay, maybe two suitcases.) And the girls and I are flying to Michigan, so I have one day of travel. I can handle that. And I will hit the ground running, I have events almost every weekend in September!

New Fall Beads

A few weeks ago my very sweet friend Terri requested that I try my mushrooms and gnomes in earthy colors to match the rest of my woodland beads. I hadn't thought about it before but once she said it I could immediately see them in my head. Little gnomes in goldenrod jackets and leaf green hats. Mushrooms in forest fresh green and tiny charms with mustard yellow mushrooms on light blue backgrounds. So adorable for fall! Thank you Terri!

And speaking of fall, I've also added a golden yellow addition to Willow Petals headpins and pendants. They remind me of fall leaves. These would look great with my Golden Branches Disk beads.

I'm so ready for fall. And for the first time in 10 years I will get to see the leaves change colors. You know that is going to inspire some autumn colored creations later in the season. I can't wait for apple cider, getting pumpkins at the farmers markets, wrapping up in woolly scarves. I can't wait to see that first snowflake of the season.

I know, it's August and I'm pushing it. But I've been baking in Texas for way to long. I need a dream and right now that dream involves a snowflake seen through a steamed up glass window pane, a mug of cocoa in my hand and my feet in some crazy fuzzy slippers. Ah to dream...

Bead Table Wednesday - Oh La La

I have finally worked out a reliable and permanent method for creating these vintage illustration pendants!

The sweet rewards of trial and error and so many beads in the trash, I can't even tell you. Transfers are quite difficult and while I'm thrilled with these ones, I am still going to experiment because on average about one out of every three pendants had a minor flaw and didn't make the cut. You can see the best of the best here.

I can't help but think of this video from Flight of Conchords when I see the Eiffel Tower and a bicycle paired together. Parlez-vous français? No.

Have I lost my mind?

I feel like one of those used car commercials - come on down to crazy Heather's and save, save, save. Okay, maybe not that bad and certainly not desperate. But I do have an abundance of beads that need to find new homes. Ombre Necklace

This was an experiment I whipped up this weekend. I wanted to try something that was a little modern and was definitely influenced by the ombre and color spectrums I've been seeing on Pinterest lately.

I created a set of disk beads in a green, teal and purple colorway using my willow, birch and floral designs for each bead.

I then fashioned a chain out of steel wire. I love that every part of this necklace was created by me, from the beads, to the chain - even the jump rings and clasp. (There are some tiny nickel seed beads tucked in between the disks.) It's amazing what you can do with wire.

I'm working on designs for fall and holiday shows. I would like to have a line of jewelry that I offer on a more regular basis.

Sometimes I miss making jewelry and selling at shows, that is where I started when I was in art school. Jess and I would do shows together on the weekends. I miss those summer Art in the Park events, meeting customers, visiting with other artists, spending the day outside - hopefully under a canopy of trees and with a fresh cool breeze. Yep, miss those days!

In between the weekends of the big shows we'd set up for a few hours at the farmer's market - mixed in among fresh flowers and an abundance of zucchinis, crisp green beans and juicy tomatoes. And then as September came we would enjoy our weekends in churches and high schools, selling at holiday shows until December. Those were fun and simpler times. Doing those smaller shows definitely have their place when paying your dues and building up your client base. We sort of out grew the 'crafts-on-a-stick' shows while living here in Texas. I know now to focus on shows that feature art work and higher end crafts.

Bead Table Wednesday - One Love

Well, my bead table is it's usual disaster so I thought I'd show you some goodies plucked from the wreckage rather than subject you to the horror of my creative aftermath. Oh the beadmanity!

Here are two orders heading out the door today. Some orders just make me stop and go 'ahh'. Above someone has a lovely creation planned with these Illuminated Manuscript beads. Since they asked for the holes to be drilled vertically I'm assuming these will end up in a necklace. Won't that be sweet?

And I adore this combination of Dogwood Pendants in green, Birch Log beads, Branch Lentils in lime and in the corner are some of my Mum beads in olive green. Sometimes filling orders can spark all sorts of creative ideas for me - combinations I wouldn't have pulled together are suddenly there whispering my name!

Rock the Trees!

Just two more days to enter the Inspired by: Trees challenge! I love trees, they just kind of speak to my soul and make me all sorts of happy. I love the pattern of birch bark, the long draping vines of the willow tree. I love oak leaves and acorns. I love trees that are tall and ancient. I love trees that are delicate and filled with blossoms. I love the lonely and bare trees of winter and marvel when they are encrusted with icy jewels. I love the sun dappling through trees in the summer. I love hearing the leaves rustle as the wind howls on Autumn days with gold and crimson swirling to the ground. Give me a tree and I'll find something inspiring about it!

So let's rock the tree theme today!

Bead Table Wednesday - Quick, get me to the beach!

I had to double check - is today really Wednesday? I'm still not convinced! Days are flying by as my to-do list is being whittled away. There isn't much on my bead table today, aside from the same ol' pile of awesome. I have been busy working away - but it's on secret book proposal projects that won't be shown for many a moon. One thing that is hanging out in the photography area are these awesome urchins that I just put up on my website. I had to photograph and list them today because they are little stars.

Yep, famous before they even hit the streets. I created these for a project earlier this year for Interweave's Everyday Bracelets emag. I puffy heart Interweave's emags. They are not just some stuffy boring pdf download. Oh no Ms. Interactive - they wow us with videos, cool links and good tricks. It's so much fun going through and it's rocking quite a collection of innovative bracelet designs from some of today's top designers.

I will also share this necklace I have hanging on a board near my work area. It reminds me of walking on the beach, collecting bits of driftwood, tiny rocks and searching for the ever-elusive piece of beach glass. Many an hour was whittled away on the shores of Lake Michigan hunting for treasures. I'm totally counting down the days until my Bead Retreat. I'm in serious need of a beach - stat!

To open your eyes to the possibilities around you, to learn to trust in your artistic instincts with the encouragement of your fellow travelers. The instructor offers new insights into both the minute and vast beauty in nature, leading you to come up with new ways to translate that experience into something tangible.

And whether you feel like an artist or not, you are given the skills to express your vision into an object. By the time you leave the retreat you are renewed and energized, ready to return home with a deeper understanding of yourself and your creative process.

I was talking to someone yesterday about my retreat and realized that creativity without any kind of boundaries or safety net can be scary for some. I'm a "let's-dive-in-there-and-see-what-we-can-come-up-with" kind of girl myself so I hadn't thought of that before. The classes and structured lessons make the process less intimidating. You don't have to be an artist to enjoy my retreat, but hopefully you'll feel like one by the time you leave.

Creativity is the willingness to take risks. Artists realize there are no mistakes, only learning opportunities. It's part of the process.

So I invite you to go on a creative journey with me for 3 days. It will be a safe place to try new things. We will play with resin, seed beads and wire, we'll study color, texture, and the design lessons in nature. We'll have fun making jewelry together. We'll walk on sandy beaches, explore the delights of the garden and visit the still quiet of the forest.

Taking Notice

These are some little vignettes from my best friend's backyard. She is so stylish in everything she does. Do you have a friend like that - the one you go to for fashion advice or who always makes even a simple event into something beautiful?

Our families have celebrates many holidays together over the last 7 years - everything from New Year's Eve dinners to their annual 4th of July cookout. They have become family - and never more true was the saying:

"Friends are the family you choose for yourself."

I definitely would have picked my best friend to be my big sister. Wise and kind, full of grace and self-confidence. I'm so thankful for the dear friends that I have, both those who are near and far.

I decided one of the things I love about traveling back home is that I pull out my camera and take notice of the little things around me.

I slow down, I hunt for the beauty in the ordinary.

I'm there, focused.

So I took my camera along to our 4th of July fete and spent some time in the moment - eyes open, searching for that play of patterns, colors and textures.

Eventually, all those tiny bits of color and design make their way into my beads - filtered through the years, tempered with sweet memories. They find their way from my heart to my hands.

Inspired by Nature Weekend Retreat

South Haven, Michigan

September 16-19

Gather together for a weekend long retreat focusing on inspiration, nature and jewelry-making. This event will celebrate the release of my book - all participants will get a signed copy of the book.

We are going to spend a weekend in my favorite place on earth, my sleepy little hometown in Michigan.

Each day will focus on a theme: Woodlands, Garden and Sea - just like my book!

For each theme there will be a field trip to gather inspiration and workshop at the hotel.

This will be a weekend of renewal to recharge those creative batteries.

Muffin Tin Challenge Complete!

Well, I wasn't about to throw a big ol' challenge out there without doing it myself. So my crazy muffin tin challenge was a little bit of a struggle for me, but I did it. It was hard to stick with what was in the tray rather than getting side tracked, but I avoided temptation and pushed the other beads aside while i focused on those little cups of goodies.

I can't show any great detail because what I finished was 4 possible magazine submissions, 3 possible future book projects and 4 upcoming free projects. Well, wait Heather, that doesn't exactly add up to 12. I know, I know, one piece is not singing my tune and will end being edited before it goes anywhere.

I used beads from Bead & Button in every project - yeah! And I found that by the last piece I suddenly had the urge to make a pendant with 3 beads. Just saying, 12 projects over 3 days is a lot of work, after the 2nd necklace I started pulling in a lot more chain into my designs to complete the projects.

I can see using this format again when I have another round of projects coming up, like for the next book or another round of magazine submissions. It really helped to clear out the mental clutter and focus on the tasks at hand. Although I think next time I will include a little sketching before the bead gathering, having more of a plan before I started may have saved me some design time.

Do you know my book is coming out September 13th? That will be here so quickly! Right before I left for Bead & Button I got to see the preview. I cried. It's so beautiful. Like, "right out of my imagination, just like I dreamt it" beautiful. I can't wait to hold it in my hands. My poor family - the embarrassment they will have to suffer whenever I see the book in a store. I will be shameless.

New Cuff Beads and My Bead & Button Stash

Cuff 'em Danno!

I finally listed the new beads. I'm so glad you all encouraged me to make more - they were a hit at the show. Some are almost sold out. I will make more but not for a little while. I have more beads right now than I know what to do with. It's quite fun to see them all stuffed in their bins - so many beads. I made over 800 for the show - well I stopped counting at 800, who knows how many were actually finished by the time it was all said and done. I sold a ton, but not 800!

I thought I'd share some of my Bead & Button stash with you - this is about half of what I brought home. Some things were traded with other artists, always an awesome way to collect new beads, others were picked up for projects for my new book proposal that I'm working on right now. I used most of my Bead & Button stash last year on book and magazine projects - so proud of myself!

My favorite find from the show was Vintage Meadows's handpainted lucite flowers - Heather French is so talented and sweet - now if I can just encourage her to hurry up and join the online world! These and Humblebeads - it's like they were made for each other.

I had been wishing and lusting and hinting to everyone I know that they could buy this for my birthday - and what do you know - it's now mine!!! I love Kerri - what an incredibly talented artist.

Hello Again

I kinda eased my way back into the studio today. There is always a little funk when trying to get back into a routine after traveling. I sorted through beads and organized inventory. I puttered around and filled a muffin tray with treasures from Bead & Button. I'm wrapping my head around upcoming plans, things that need to happen, things I'm super excited about, opportunities that floated into my life like dandelion seeds on a summer breeze. Over the last few weeks I have enjoyed my family and favorite places. Sorted through my priorities and where I want to head over the next 6 months - how is 2011 almost half over?

I'm trying to let go of things that are weighing me down. Sorting through what is important and what's holding me back. My biggest goal right now is trying to eliminate stress and cut out things that I don't need to do any longer. I am way too busy and I hate it. Really, really hate it. The workaholic in me has received a smack down from the mother in me - the one that is telling me to take care of myself first or I won't be able to take care of anything else. Am I the only one that has these crazy talks with myself?

There is also the girl in me who wants to enjoy summer and find balance between work and family. I want to sip ice tea from a glass jar and eat juicy watermelon, corn on the cob and big red tomatoes hand plucked from the farmer's market. I want to string fairy lights in my backyard, pull out a table and dine alfresco. There is the girl in me that wants to spend the end of the day sitting in a pool. And listen to cicadas sing their summer song at night. I want to lay my head down at night on a cool crisp pillow and not worry about tomorrow but close my eyes and think of how wonderful today was. I want to be carefree and happy-go-lucky. I want things simpler.

How do I get from where my life is to where I want it to be? I wish I knew an easy answer for that. I guess it's mostly just a matter of being in the moment and letting go.

What an amazing show. I had the best time this year. I was able to meet so many wonderful people. I'm always so thankful for those who visit with me at the show and indulge in their art bead fix at my table! I love the thoughtfulness of Humblebead fans who bring in their jewelry to show me how they used the beads they bought the previous year. It really touches my heart that you took the time to share your creations with me.

I'm so thankful for this community - for the amazing beadmakers, creative designers and those companies that support the handcrafted mission of using art beads with their products. So very, very thankful for the friendships forged over the years and for new connections made with beady friends.

The show always whizzes by way before I'm ready for it to end. There were people I wish I could have visited with more and others I didn't get a chance to meet. I find I just didn't have a very high energy level this year. I think 24 hours in the car driving up didn't help! So now I'm taking a week off to spend with my family, regroup and have some fun. I will share more goodies later and I have more updates to share on the Art Bead Scene about the show.

There are crazy days ahead and this will be a very memorable summer - I couldn't have asked for a better kick off to the season!

My cup overfloweth...that's how I feel today.

Bead & Button Update

I have been working away and I'm on schedule and I've slept 8 hours for the last three nights! (That's a miracle!) Today will be my last day of clay work and then we'll be painting, sanding and tagging things for 2 days. I stopped counting when I reached 700 focal bead, pendants, connectors and clasps. That doesn't include disk beads or charms. I think I may have enough! Funny though, the pile doesn't look like 700 beads. But I will have a full table.

I CAN NOT WAIT TO GO!!!

I have sketched out a new plan for my booth and it involves needing 3 of these:

So if you were lusting and thought you'd have to wait until mid-June to get your mitts on one - well here is your chance.

Some of you have been asking about the vintage image pendants. I ran into a technical issue with the permanency of the the image transfers and didn't want to cover them in resin. So I'm waiting on my new supplies and will have those after the show. My last tests were a success, but I couldn't find one of the items locally, so I'm waiting on the FedEx truck.

It's Bead Table Wednesday or By The Way - I have 6 days left to get ready for Bead & Button!

This is what we are working on today - antiquing, sanding and finishing all of these beads. They look so different in this candy coated state.

So thankful I have full-time help or I would be crying and not blogging right now.

I finished making my clasps last night and they await paint. Today I'm thinking I should press out some more of the new cuff beads. I only made 6 of each style. That doesn't seem like enough does it? Or does it? I'm not sure, maybe it is.

I hate this part of getting ready - the second guessing. On EVERYTHING!

And the best and worst part of working with polymer clay - I can make beads up until the day I leave. I'm really trying to finish all the beadmaking by Sunday and have 1 day to work on the rest of the finishing.

New Beads

Hello there!

Making the beads, making the beads! It's fun and exciting getting ready for the show. I love seeing stacks and stacks of my favorite beads piling up. Here are some new things for the show - they are curved cuff beads for bracelets in some awesome summery designs. I'm super happy with them!

I need to finalize my booth display. I want it to reflect the themes of the book - so woodland, garden and sea. Trying to think up the best way to showcase my work that is flattering, eye-catching but not overwhelming. We are driving to the show this year, so I can bring along a few bulkier display items. Last year my entire booth packed up into a suitcase! I still don't know how I managed that.

I can't wait to see my beady friends - that's the best part of the show! Meeting up with all my favorite bead artists and shop owners. Seeing my favorite teachery peeps and then meeting old and new Humblebead fans. If you could see me right now I just did a little dance in chair.

The best part about getting ready for Bead & Button this year? Full time help! Jess is such a trooper. We've been painting beads into the wee hours of the night. All this week he will be rolling disk beads. That's my least favorite part about making beads and he just sits right down and does it for hours at a time. I think that's what you call true love.

Hannah modeled my bracelet for me and then walked away with it. I guess that means it was a hit!

I'm talking a few hours off to spend with my family today. Bead & Button or not, I must spend time with my dearest ones and make sure they don't feel neglected.

Bead Table Wednesday - Cuff Bracelets

So I blogged about cuff bracelets on the Art Bead Scene today and had the idea to create a memory wire cuff bracelet with tiny charms at the end. The first one is made with a mix of peanut seed beads and copper seed bead with one of my petal headpins and a Green Girl Studio pewter nest.

The second one is a little smaller with one of my tiny nest charms, a Vintaj brass bird and 3 amazonite bead dangles. This color of peanut seed bead is called seafoam and I love it! Reminds me of robin eggs.

And here we have a big ol' chunky bracelet with 5 stands of peanut seed beads in a copper color. Using the peanut seed beads adds a nice texture and bulks up the strands. This one almost reminds me of braided leather. The charms are one of my tiny starfish and a ceramic sand dollar from Erin of Every Heart Crafts - I wish she still made beads!

So that was my quick afternoon diversion from a million unpainted and half-finished beads. OH and speaking of quick - I used a handy little bead spinner to whip those seed beads unto the memory wire in just a few minutes. I use the end of the memory wire instead of the curved needle. LoVe that thing!

Bead & Button prep and new charms!

I have an ominous heavy metal tune nagging in the back of my head: "This is the final countdown..."

The piles of beads are growing - awesome.

They have holes drilled - sweet.

They are naked - what the heck! I have some serious days of painting ahead.

This is only 1/2 of what I'm bringing to Bead & Button. I still have disk beads, birds & eggs, woodland creatures and clasps to finish.

What me - freaking out? No way, I have 2 weeks left. OH my lord - can we say denial?

Another bead inspired by my illustrations. I actually have a children's book I've been working on with a bird character who loves beads. You can see her below.

Bead Table Wednesday - Summertime!

Officially in love!

I had this little brilliant idea for a charm based an a block print I did of fireflies in a jar. And it turned out just like the print. Art inspired by life, beads inspired by art. Love, I tell you. Love!

I've worked up a whole series of new charms. My favorites will go to Bead & Button. Here we have a dragonfly and Queen Anne's Lace. Yep, I'm ready for warm summer nights, watching fireflies in the distance, hearing crickets put on a show, drinking ice tea while citronella candles flickr on the porch. I'm ready for cookouts and splashing in the pool. And SLEEPING in and a loosey goosey schedule. But first I have to survive the prep for Bead & Button and then I can play like a carefree kid on summer vacation!

Bead Cruise 2012

I've finally worked out all the details for Bead Cruise 2012. It takes a team to get it all working and thanks to Memory Crusin', my travel agent, for all the hard work they do behind the scenes. I get the fun jobs, like planning our events and picking another round of awesome instructors. And then we get to work out what amazing classes to offer.

I am teaching two classes on the cruise next year. The first one is shown above, it's a Faux Sea Glass pendant. I will teach how to make a flexible mold, how to work with 2-part resin, adding colorant and other tips and tricks to create these beach-inspired pieces.

The second class is a variation on a project from my book. I'll have new photos for that soon.

Joining me for 2012 include instructors Tracy Stanley, Kerry Bogert, Jill Wiseman and Beverly Herman! I'm really excited to work with such a fun and talented group of artists. Classes range from beading, to metalwork, wire-work and we have fun classes like the resin and even a jewelry photography class.

I made this little card for myself and printed it out, it's next to my computer as a good reminder of changes that are coming soon.

This summer will be filled with new directions and new adventures. I will share more about that when I can. But what I will share with you is my fear over change. The things that are taking place, I want them, really really want them. But I'm also afraid of what that change means. I'm afraid my little adventure won't be successful or that it will cause undue stress on me and my family. I'm afraid I won't be up to the task and challenges that will be demanded of me. I'm afraid of falling back into old patterns that have long been resolved. But then I think to myself, it will all work out, there is no challenge you can't face, you are a different and more mature person, you won't fall back into the old when you've learned so much from those times. The rewards will be greater than the risks. And I breathe and trust in things bigger than me and know that everything will be okay.

Speaking of old patterns, you will not believe what I did this weekend - cleaned off my bead tables!!! I'm gearing up to turn this room into a serious bead factory for the next few weeks and needed a fresh start. I can't believe it. I should have taken a before picture - you wouldn't believe then either! Sadly, it won't last as I go into a polymer clay frenzy and bead trays will be stacked all over this place. (This is one of three tables that I work on.)

And I thought I'd share this very cool box that my daughter Evangeline made for me for Mother's Day. You can see it on the shelf in my studio. It's made from phone book pages. That kid is brilliant I tell you! I was talking to her the other day about what she wanted to do when she grew up, it went something like this:

Mom: "And so what do you want to do after high school."

Vangie: "Have fun and travel with Hannah."

Mom: "That's cool, but what about after the summer, you know like for college."

Vangie: "I don't want to go to college."

Mom: "Well tough, you have to go for at least two years. You can take business classes and study some things that you like."

Vangie: "Why? I'm going to open an Etsy shop. How hard can it be?" (Last sentence dripping with sarcasm.)

End of conversation. As I walk away shaking my head and trying not to laugh!

Tropical Garden Pendant

Today, I wrote a post on the Art Bead Scene about pendants with links and decided to whip one up this afternoon. This one has a new pendant that I had sitting on the bead table for awhile. I'm cleaning up the studio today and ran across them. I paired them with one of my favorite dogwood beads. I love the dogwood beads so much, the flower came from my grandmother's antique spoon collection.

It's summer here, that means I like to wear light jewelry and long pendants. This one hangs about 28" long. I want to do some summer shows - I have very fond memories of doing summer art in the park shows with Jess when we were younger. Outdoor shows are so hard and such a gamble. My hats off to those brave crafters who pitch their tents, lay out their wares and plaster on a smile during those long, hot days.

Bead Table Wednesday - Panic!

My bead tables are crazy, crazy messes at the moment. I dare only show you what's on the photo staging area only. These are some new prototypes of vintage image pendants I'm working on. There are technical issues to work through that may end up being solved with a coat of resin. I'll keep you posted.

Okay, I don't even want to know how many days are left until Bead & Button because the math only adds up to one thing: not enough time!!!

Actually I'm not really panicking. I'm not running around screaming or throwing thing. That will happen in about 2 1/2 weeks. No, I'm just trying to work as much as a I can in serious production mode while at the same time trying to create new work for the show. It will all come together, I just don't see it happening without a few sleepless nights between now and June 7th.

But it's all exciting just the same. I can't wait to see everyone, see all the beads. SHOP for all the beads. I'm going to meet some online friends for the first time, see lots of beady friends and I get to spend a few days with my dearest Erin!!!

Designing with Toggle Clasps

I thought I'd share this design alternative to the project I have in the Beads 2011 issue.

Both projects use my toggle clasp as the pendant. This one features my Harvest toggle with amber glass teardrops, square smoky quartz beads and these cool square jump rings that I found at Hobby Lobby! The chain is from Ornamentea.

The project in Beads 2011 features my toggle in mulberry. You'll have to check out the issue to see the other project! I love this magazine and eagerly await it to come out each year. It's stuffed with new sources and tips.

A few tips for using toggles:

Add a tiny bit of chain to the bar end so that it will lay flat against the toggle.
If you use beads on beading wire, they will rest funny under the clasp and it won't lay quite right.
Add the chain to the bar and pull it threw the toggle, pull the chain to see how much you'll need for the toggle to lay flat and attach to the first jump ring or bead on your necklace, trim the chain after you have the correct length.
Unless you create a long necklace, the toggle will rest at an angle so plan your design accordingly.
Bracelets with artist made toggles are a great way to dress up a design with just a little effort!

Charming Design Ideas

Okay, I better make a bijillion more little charms because they are WAY too much fun to play with, ideas are just popping up left and right!

The inspiration for the charms were for small gifts for graduations and birthdays for the younger crowd - so I was thinking of pairing them up with simple Vintaj charms, Czech glass and stamped disks on delicate cable chain.

Above, A Mighty Oak - I love that acorns symbolize potential - such a small seed grows into a mighty tree. Kinda perfect for a birthday gift don't you think? Loving the new charms and pendants from Vintaj.

The second pendant is a copper blank that has been stamped with a texture plate and antiqued. I layered on a Willow Charm in midnight blue. A simple piece like this would be great for impulse purchases for summer shows.

And another new bead design I have in the works - some simple faux bois pendants that would be great for layering on charms. I'm thinking of doing them in a few colors like red and teal - I'm kinda going for an old barn wood feel. They would look super cute with a brass owl charm layered on them.

I think adding a collection of simple pieces to your booth during shows or in your shop can really boost your sales - impulse purchases rule! I wish I was doing some summer shows, I miss those fun arts in the park ones in West Michigan. Outdoor summer shows in Texas are torture - let's slow roast the crafters!

OOOHH - totally random alert - wait until you see the beads that Jess is making. Such a talented guy and who knew he could design such cuteness!!!

Bead Table Wednesday - New Beads!

It's Bead Table Wednesday and my tables are filled with new beads. I don't know what's up but I can hardly keep up with all the new ideas popping into my head. My latest are these teeny-tiny charms.

I was thinking the other day of using my willow branch charms with a stamped copper disk as an example for a cute graduation pendant. You could do the person's name and/or year of graduation. Well that got me thinking of other little charms that would be cute for that idea and before I know it I had almost a dozen new designs whipped up.

The Woodland Collection: here we have a snazzy little fox, curious little hoot, a wee acorn and oak leaf.

Garden Collection: The bees are abuzzing in this series - a tiny hive, mini bee and a sweet little blossom in golden honey and fresh greens.

Queen of All Collection - I thought these would be fun charms for those us who rule a little kingdom - if only in our minds!

Garden Collection - a sweet nest and butterfly in hues of teal, copper and burnt umber.

Except for the flower and key, all of these designs come from my sketchbook, hand-carved into molds and hand-painted for a watercolor effect.

I have so many more beads that I'm working on, including an expanded selection of my Willow designs. I have teardrops, connectors, headpins and my favorite, the leaf pendant. Love that I can round out this collection. Oh I have willow disk beads in mulberry and navy too to match that pendants and charms. And there is the whole series of vintage image pendants - those will be for later this week, depending on how quick I am!

So that's a glimpse of what I've been working on and what is buried on the mess of my bead tables, yes more than one messy bead table is filled with my current creations in all stages of progress.

We're gonna need a bigger table...(you have to say that in the accent of that crazy guy from Jaws.)

Jump Rings & Wire Bails

A customer was asking about jump rings and bails for my pendants so I thought I would share some ideas with you today on a few variations.

First, I recommend a 10-12mm jump ring in 18 gauge wire, they work the best with my pendants. You can find them commercially made or you can take a few minutes and whip up your own with 18 gauge wire. If you want to antique the jump rings do it before adding them to the pendants. Use a good pair of flush cutters to cut straight edges on the jump rings. You can use anything for a dowel for your jump rings. I often use makers or the handle of my exacto knife. (Blade removed!) There are also some handy jump ring making kits on the market. Here are directions from Jean Campbell on making your own jump rings. They are so easy-peasy!

Next up is a simple wrapped loop wire bail with 18 gauge wire. I wrapped it once and then wrapped the remaining wire to create the more free-form look seen here.

The exact same technique done with about 8" of 22 gauge wire wrapped over and over again.

Here is a simple version of my nest wire wrapped bail. I used 24 gauge wire, pulled it through the hole 3 times and then did a little wrapping to secure the wires.

So there you have a few options for attaching your art bead pendants to a beaded necklace, chain or ribbon. Happy Creating!

Yesterday I spent the morning at the local botanical garden, sketching and taking photos, visiting with other artists. It was a good reminder that not everything in my life has be about business, I can take a break. I didn't realize how burned out I was feeling until I spent an afternoon not worrying about things.

Reminders to myself:

Take care of yourself - spend time in nature - walk - sleep well - eat good - laugh - spend time with loved ones - let go of a few worries - trust in bigger things - breath.

Earthenwood Design Team Inspired Jewelry

Last month the oh so talented beadmaker Melanie Brooks of Earthenwood Studio sent me some goodies to play with and this week I finally sat myself down for a little creative session.

First up, thanks to Tracy Stanley's class on the Bead Cruise, I learned how to make my own chain and decided that's what I wanted to do with a big ol' chunk of a tassel. I had this ivy covered porcelain bead from Joan Miller from my first trip to Bead & Button. (Just saying the word makes my eye twitch.) I paired it with a lantern and ceramic drop from Gaea. And look, there is Melanie's resin covered key. It's the most! It's hard to see but there is text that says medley. I liked that, like a little secret message was written on the key, maybe an invitation to some fairy shindig in some secret garden. The other key is from Objects and Elements and then some of my favorite Vintaj leaves.

I like jewelry that reminds of paths or lessons I need to learn. Right now nest eggs are on my mind and saving money up for some big things that are coming my way. When the egg shaped pendant first arrived, I immediately knew I would turn it into a toggle. I'm all over that crackle glaze finish on Melanie's pendant and connector pieces - sweet! I paired it up with ceramic beads from Melanie that I had in my stash and a little round tab from Elaine Ray. The bird, egg and golden branch disk bead are from my Humblebeads inventory - yeah for inventory. That needs to grow faster. (There goes my twitching eye again.)

Almost missed today - I have been making beads non stop for the last three days, getting orders out the door and hurrying to answer emails before I fall into bed. Above are things done and things left undone. Seriously I need like 4 more hands!

Bead of the Month Club Update

I thought I would share with you the beads that I have created so far for the Bead of the Month Club. It is so much fun to give myself a day to play in the studio and make something special. It's a nice change from my production work and often spurs on several other ideas while I test out prototypes.

The Cherry Blossom Tree pendants will be available at the beginning of May with 50% of the sales going to the Red Cross for aid to Japan.

I created this necklace with one of the Cherry Blossom Tree Pendants, as I made several extras last month. I paired them with dyed buri nuts, resin beads and brass.

The Bead of the Month Club was sold out, but I have decided to offer 5 more. You can purchase the year long subscription here. You'll first package will include the 3 beads above and April's bead. They will go quickly as two have already sold this morning. Don't wait this will be your last chance.

Bead Table Wednesday - Tropical Pendants

I'm missing tropical islands and beaches so much today that I had to create something to remind me of those awesome days on the Bead Cruise! Although, at 90 degrees it's feeling rather tropical here today too.

I created these Hibiscus Petal/Leaf Pendants in some yummy colors. I'm rather smitten with leaf and teardrop shaped pendants at the moment and thought I needed some of my own.

Loving the colors, bright and fun but antiqued with an earthy umber.

Do not adjust your monitor, this photo is so sad to me.

Burnt beads.

There is nothing worse in my studio than a batch of burnt beads. It hasn't happened in years, I had adjusted my oven to work on a different project a few days ago and forget to set it back. Oh the waste, the horror. Oh the bead-manity!

Ok, so it wasn't exactly Apocalypse Now, but a few choice words may have been uttered.
